Easter moves every year. That's the short answer to the question everyone asks first. In 2027 Western Easter Sunday lands on March 28 and Orthodox Easter follows five weeks later on May 2. Here's the full stretch of Holy Week, and why the date shifts.

How many days until Easter 2027?

The counter above tracks Western Easter Sunday, March 28, 2027, and updates every second in your own timezone. If you're planning around Orthodox Easter, set your board to May 2 instead.

Because Easter falls on a Sunday, the full stretch from Good Friday through Easter Monday is a four-day weekend across most of Europe and much of the Commonwealth. In many countries, retail, schools and public services close for the whole run.

How the date is calculated

The rule is old and precise: Easter Sunday is the first Sunday after the first full moon that falls on or after the vernal equinox on March 21. Because the moon's 29.5-day cycle doesn't fit the calendar year, Easter can land anywhere between March 22 and April 25.

Astronomers can predict every full moon centuries in advance, so Easter dates are known well ahead. What can vary is the local astronomical reality versus the "ecclesiastical" tables the churches actually use, which occasionally differ from real observations by a day.

Why Western and Orthodox Easter differ

Both churches use the same "first Sunday after the first full moon after the equinox" rule. What differs is the calendar they measure from.

Western churches use the Gregorian calendar and treat March 21 as the equinox. Orthodox churches use the Julian calendar for the calculation, which currently sits about 13 days behind. The result is that the two Easters usually differ by one to five weeks, and coincide only occasionally, roughly every four years.
